Did you know that Pink Shirt Day started in a Nova Scotia high school with two students who decided to take a stand against bullying?   

David Shepherd and Travis Price were high school students who noticed a new, Grade 9 male student who was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. They gathered up their friends and headed off to a discount store where they bought 50 pink tank tops. They sent out messages to their schoolmates that night, and the next morning they hauled the shirts to school in a plastic bag. As they stood in the foyer handing out the shirts, the bullied boy walked in. His face spoke volumes. “It looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders,” Mr. Price recalled. The bullies were never heard from again.

Since then, Pink Shirt Day has taken off in schools and workplaces everywhere.  NGPS students and staff wear pink to continue to bring awareness and to symbolize that we as a society will not tolerate bullying anywhere. School assemblies and activities throughout this week bring awareness to the issue of bullying but activities throughout the year focus on the importance of friendship and teamwork and developing positive personal characteristics such as kindness and compassion.
