Assistant Principals announced for Onoway Jr/Sr High School

The Division is pleased to announce the appointment of two Assistant Principals to the administrative team at Onoway Jr/Sr High School, commencing with the 2024 school year.

Mr. Chris Hallowes is an experienced educator who understands the importance of cultivating relationships with all stakeholders to deliver exceptional results for students. Over his 20+ years in the classroom, Mr. Hallowes has taught a range of subjects, served as a mentor for student teachers, served as acting administrator, and has coordinated and coached numerous extracurricular activities for students, including running club and the cross-country running team. 

Mr. Hallowes shares, "It is an honour to be joining the administrative team at OJSH! Having just finished my first year at Onoway, I can say that I felt welcomed by staff, students, and the community. I look forward to seeing students achieve success both in the classroom and in their extracurricular endeavours. Our staff is incredibly talented and dedicated to empowering our students to be at their best."

Mr. Hallowes has a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta, and a Masters of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University.

Ms. Karla Schmidt-Peterson has been an educator with NGPS since 2014 when she joined Onoway Jr/Sr High School, teaching Independent Living Skills. Since that time, Ms. Schmidt-Peterson has taught a full range of core and option classes while engaging in leadership support, including collaborating with partner schools, participating on the QLE Leadership Team, planning and facilitating professional development for OJSH staff, coordinating Collaborative Team Meetings, and serving as the school's Inclusive Education Facilitator.

Karla shares, "I was welcomed by NGPS a little over ten years ago and have been privileged to belong to the Onoway Jr./Sr. High School learning community for most of that time. We have an incredible team at our school serving a diverse population of students, families, and stakeholders. Becoming an Assistant Principal is an exciting opportunity for me to continue developing these positive collaborative relationships in a new capacity. I am proud of the supportive culture we have fostered at OJSH and am looking forward to further building on this vision for a safe, dynamic, inclusive environment that expands the future possibilities for students in our school and in the ever-changing world beyond."  

Ms. Schmidt-Peterson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana University College and a Bachelor Of Education After Degree from the University of Alberta.
