Former grad returns to Hilltop as Red Seal Chef
Posted on:The cafeteria at Hilltop Jr/Sr High School is now affectionately being referred to by staff and students as the Hilltop Bistro thanks to their very own Red Seal Chef!
Kendall Mercer graduated from Hilltop in 2006. Her interests led her to Edmonton where she studied Baking and Culinary Arts at NAIT. Kendall earned her Red Seal Chef certification while working in Edmonton and is excited to bring her skills and passion home with her in her new position at the school.
The cafeteria offers up fresh baking and lunch time favourites with a chef's touch like lasagna, chicken alfredo and homemade pizza and paninis. The day I was there the special was butter chicken with rice!
Grade 10, 11 and 12 students are getting in on the action and joining Kendall in the cafeteria kitchen earning credits for Volunteering and RAP (Registered Apprenticeship Program, in this case for Foods students). Grade 9 students with an interest in cooking are also helping out in the kitchen. They don't earn credits for their help, but they get to explore their interests with this unique opportunity!
