What is a Winter Count?

Winter counts are pictorial calendars or histories in which tribal records and events were recorded by Native Americans in North America. They were physical records that were used in conjunction with oral history. The earliest winter counts were painted on hides. They were transferred to muslin and paper once those materials became available.
