Percy Baxter students create Iroquois-inspired Winter Counts
Posted on:Students learn how the Iroquois recorded their histories, dates and events and create their own winter count and pictographs as part of their Social Studies unit studying the Indigenous tribe.
What is a Winter Count?
Winter counts are pictorial calendars or histories in which tribal records and events were recorded by Native Americans in North America. They were physical records that were used in conjunction with oral history. The earliest winter counts were painted on hides. They were transferred to muslin and paper once those materials became available.
